Records fall into nearly the same categories as those for sailplanes and are authorised by the FAI (Federation Aeronautique International - the world's Air Sports Federation).

Technically, the current world record for "free distance" is held by Manfred Ruhmer with 700.6 km in 2001, although Mike Barber has flown a distance of 704 km (437 miles) on June 19th 2002 in Texas.
