Competition

Competitions started with "flying as long as possible" and spot landings. With increasing performance, these were replaced by cross-country flying.

Hang gliding competitions are like a 3-D boat race in the sky. Usually two to four waypoints have to be passed with a landing at a goal. The waypoints are usually confirmed with low-power GPS units.

There is a World Championship every two years; in 2005 it was held in Australia and won by Oleg Bondarchuk. It will be hosted by Texas in 2007.
