Rally Cars

In the industry-leading FIA World Rally Championship, the cars used are built to current World Rally Car specification. Previously Group A and Group B specification machines (very powerful turbocharged engines in lightweight bodies) were used. Group B cars were banned in 1986 due to an unacceptable number of deaths and injuries among drivers and spectators. It's worth noting, though, that due to advances in technology today's WRC rally cars are actually much faster than those in the Group B era, due mainly to superior braking technologies. Deaths are now very rare due to modern safety regulations including the HANS device and improved spectator control policies. Still, recent driver fatalities remind us that rally remains as dangerous as it is unique - the rogue among motor sports.
